La Plagne, France

Ouch… That’s what I remember as I exited corner 17 on the quick, abrupt, high g-force La Plagne track. More importantly what I COULDN’T remember was corner 17… As you know Skeleton sleds do not have brakes so when I came out of the finish corner (19) I started to drag my sled on the wall as I always do to prevent hitting the crash pads and potentially damaging my runners. But as I was heading up the steep braking stretch I came to an early stop and didn’t even make it up the outrun… I guess this means … Continue reading

Good ol'Winterberg

Winterberg… I was telling myself the last 2 weeks this is my favorite place in the whole world!!! Gosh I hate lying to myself!!! Our physio Tyson Plesuk & I set very realistic goals for this race. Just get a 2nd run… Last season when they had the trial 3 heat format we all were a bit cocky with our attitudes, all we have to do is finish in the top 10 to qualify for the 3rd heat. Well we had a huge snow storm and I finished 13th… So this year, no assumptions were made, just set the goal… … Continue reading

Lessons & Positives

No matter what the situation there is always a lesson to be learned… or a positive to be drawn… But right now after I have finished a disappointing, haunting 5th place at the Whistler World Cup I am having a really tough time finding “the lesson” and a “positive”….   Back the truck up… When we first came to Whistler in March of 2008 the Canadian Skeleton team was full of energy knowing this was OUR house and we would host the world in the 2010 Olympic Games. I remember being a sponge and excited about absolutely everything! How amazing … Continue reading

It Happens…

Bumper Sticker Guy: [running after Forrest] Hey man! Hey listen, I was wondering if you might help me. ‘Cause I’m in the bumper sticker business and I’ve been trying to think of a good slogan, and since you’ve been such a big inspiration to the people around here I thought you might be able to help me jump into – WOAH! Man, you just ran through a big pile of dog shit! Forrest Gump: It happens. Bumper Sticker guy: What, shit? Forrest Gump: Sometimes.   Yep it does… that’s about all I have to say about that…   After some … Continue reading

GOLDEN day for Canada

World Cup season was kicked off in Lake Placid, NY and with Hurricane Sandy not far away, weather was sketchy in the east. With the extreme winds the track crew had to make a tough decision and roll up the blinds on the track so the wind and the sun combined the ice on the track melted. With only a couple of days to go until official training, we were sliding on the roughest ice I have seen in a while. I don’t deal well with abrupt style tracks as it is, and then to actually have my sled … Continue reading

Pre Season Update

What an intense summer… I was over-eager to get barrel racing as soon as I was home from World championships and I didn’t take the time necessary to get myself ready. The middle of March I hit a barrel so hard I had to get stitches in my leg and I had to turn out of all the indoor rodeos. So I had to wait til the end of May and the Grande Prairie “Stompede” to kick off my season. Honestly I didn’t accomplish what I set out to do this summer. I hit a lot of barrels and had … Continue reading

Silver medal at World Championships

Right on track for Sochi… After a disappointing 5th place at the 2010 Olympics in Whistler a new 4-year plan was put in place. Duff Gibson the Head coach of the Canadian Skeleton team since the spring of 2010 sat me down and said, “If you continue on to Sochi 2014 we have to focus on consistency at World Championships”. Having won the Overall World Cup title twice in my career that was a hard mental shift for me to make. I always want to be challenging for the Overall Crystal Globe, but after Whistler, I realized I want to … Continue reading

St Moritz

9:34pm January 18th I got the phone call we all dread… It was my stepmom Tammy calling me to let me know my Dad was in the hospital and they think he has a blockage in his heart… I was trying to retain all of the information she was giving me, but my mind started to spin out of control… Blockage? What does that mean? Surgery? What kind?? Repairs may be necessary depending on the damage… What damage?? I’m sure she repeated herself a few times in our conversation, but Tam has a way of being overly positive and when … Continue reading

Konigssee brings change

This week in Konigssee, Germany has flown by! After an extremely emotional week in Altenberg, Germany I took a timeout and spent a day in Igls, Austria with my boyfriend Paul who was racing on the Europa cup circuit. A big snowstorm rolled in and the race I travelled to watch got cancelled so I was actually able to have a full day off, exactly what I needed to reenergize, collect my thoughts and be ready to race. The mood of the team was pretty low after the devastating crash with our bobsleigh team and a disappointing race in Altenberg. … Continue reading

Devastation…Perspective brought in Altenberg

Altenberg Germany… A stop on tour that I dread every year because I’m waiting to see what bad incident is going to take place. Every year we have something drastic happen, whether I get too sick to race or have been sick early in the week so I don’t perform to my potential. Then there are the traumatic crashes that most sliders can say they have experienced on this track and had the ability to be able to walk away from it. This year the unimaginable happened where 3 of my bobsleigh teammates were rushed to hospital, 1 of them … Continue reading
