Timing lesson in Park City

Timing – “The regulation of occurrence, pace, or coordination to achieve a desired effect, as in music, the theater, athletics, or mechanics”   I was sitting in the hot tub tonight with 2 of my teammates when we got talking about our “early” days in Skeleton. The 3 of us all come from different generations of sliders so we were reminiscing what it was like when we first started sliding and the journey it has taken us on. Because I was 15 when I started this sport and my cousin Ryan Davenport is a 2x World Champion and sled builder, … Continue reading

Calgary World Cup Race

Adversity – “Misfortune”   Well that definition implies luck is involved… and I don’t believe in luck… well I believe “luck is when preparation meets opportunity”.   In 16 years of competing and 15 of them on the World Cup tour I have never pushed out of the groove… until my 82nd International competition at Calgary, AB Dec 2, 2010. I was sitting in 3rd place after the 1st run. Excited and confident I would move up because I didn’t run far enough with the sticky groove and had a 12th ranked start time then the reading on the groove … Continue reading

Finally! Podium in Whistler!

Nostalgic – sentimental recollection…   That’s exactly what I felt the 1st day I arrived at the Whistler Sliding Centre, 9 months after the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. I walked up the track examining the profiles of the ice to prepare myself for my 1st run of the season and when I got to the bend away (corner 8) I took a moment for myself and sat on the wall and replayed my 4th and final Olympic run in my mind, where I came out of corner 7 and smashed the right wall and it sent me into the left … Continue reading

Welcome to Whistler

Back on the Whistler track! It has been great to hit the fast speeds over 135km/hr we still have more in the tank because top speeds here are approaching 145km/hr so stay tuned for some good stories!  It was an eventful trip out to Whistler, I decided to make the drive myself in one day the back route through Cache Creek and all was smooth until the last hour of my trip where I hit a snow storm, was down to one lane of snow covered road through the mountains with fog. I hadn’t seen another vehicle in over 100km … Continue reading

2010 Canadian Champion

Well the season has been kicked off and on the track I started on 16 years ago, Calgary. The Canadian Championships were held on Saturday and I was fortunate to have a good race amongst my tough teammates and come away with my 5th title. Its always an edgy feeling, the 1st race of season, similar to that 1st run of the year, where you wonder if you still remember how to do this!? here is the link to tsn.ca  http://www.tsn.ca/story/?id=340250  We are off to Whistler now. There are 2 selection races remaining, so I will find out who my … Continue reading

Passion For Excellence

Well a busy couple of days I’ve had! Big story of the week is the launch of “Passion for Excellence” made possible by the Dilawri-Group Please check out the website to find out how it all works, but the short of it is since the Olympics in Whistler I have been overwhelmed with speaking requests by schools. I realized the power of sport when I was walking Whistler and you would hear “Oh Canada” in all kinds of accents and I couldn’t get 10ft down the street without a total stranger giving me a hug and saying “we are so … Continue reading

Summer Update

The season isn’t too far away from us now and that was a big reality as we just finished up our annual team retreat in Revelstoke, BC. Lots of fun was to be had where we had ample time to compete in other areas besides Skeleton and it was apparent we all are hungry for the season to begin because we were ruthless when it came to activities like beach volleyball, Wii Fit and even bocce ball! It was a nice getaway for me to bond with my teammates who essentially are my family all winter long as we travel … Continue reading

Mellisa & Fashion…

I laugh as I write this heading because I have no fashion sense at all! But I was fortunate to be apart of this super fun photoshoot in Calgary’s Avenue Magazine. Colin Way is a very talented photographer, Carl Abad chose awesome pieces from his store “Worth” on 17th Ave in Calgary and Teslin Ward did beautiful work with make up as well as helped me get ready for a fund raiser later that night “Gold Medal Plates”! Thanks guys it was great working with you! Check out the Feb 2010 issue of Avenue on news stand or online here: … Continue reading

World Champion!!!

World Champion!!! Has a nice ring to it! Yes this was the goal at the beginning of the season, building momentum, attempting to do my absolute best on every track in the world to see if I was capable of success with such diversity. Not only are all the tracks in the world different, but every week is different. Confidence, environment, health, training; it all plays a part in the outcome at the end. And I will be the 1st to admit that there were weeks this year that I had no reason to be confident. There were weeks that … Continue reading

Silver in St. Moritz = Victory

Silver in St. Moritz is sweet victory for me! 4/100ths of a second I finished behind Great Britain’s Shelley Rudman and sometimes that would make you wonder all the “woulda, coulda, shoulda’s” but in my situation, after the week I had I was probably happier than Shelley! I started my week off blind, literally! Our first day of training on the only natural track in the world, it was about -15C. I wanted to see what was going on in the 1st kink (a little corner) so I was outside ready to go for about 5 minutes watching the 2 … Continue reading
